Extending cosmological natural selection

چکیده

The purpose of this paper is to propose an extension to Lee Smolin’s hypothesis that our own universe belongs to a population of universes evolving by natural selection. Smolin’s hypothesis explains why the parameters of physics possess the values we observe them to possess, but depends upon the contingent fact that the universe is a quantum relativistic universe. It is proposed that the prior existence of a quantum relativistic universe can itself be explained by postulating that a process of cosmogenic drift evolves universes towards stable (‘rigid’) mathematical

The status of cosmological natural selection

The problem of making predictions from theories that have landscapes of possible low energy parameters is reviewed. Conditions for such a theory to yield falsifiable predictions for doable experiments are given. It is shown that the hypothesis of cosmological natural selection satisfies these conditions, thus showing that it is possible to continue to do physics on a landscape without invoking ...

Using neutron stars and primordial black holes to test theories of quantum gravity

Three observational tests of cosmological natural selection, a theory that follows from some hypotheses about quantum gravity, are described. If true, this theory explains the choices of the parameters of the standard model of particle physics. The first, the observation of a pulsar with mass greater than 2.5M◦, would cleanly refute the theory. The second and third, having to do with primordial...

A Critique of Cosmological Natural Selection

Mathematical physicist Lee Smolin has proposed a theory of Cosmological natural selection which, he argues, explains the existence of our life-supporting universe, and which, he claims, is superior to Anthropic Principle explanations. I will argue in this paper that the theory of Cosmological natural selection does not provide an improvement upon the Weak Anthropic Principle. According to curre...

Cosmological natural selection and the purpose of the universe

The cosmological natural selection (CNS) hypothesis holds that the fundamental constants of nature have been fine-tuned by an evolutionary process in which universes produce daughter universes via the formation of black holes. Here, we formulate the CNS hypothesis using standard mathematical tools of evolutionary biology. Specifically, we capture the dynamics of CNS using Price’s equation, and ...

Extending Darwin’s Analogy: Bridging Differences in Concepts of Selection between Farmers, Biologists, and Plant Breeders1

based on an analogy between selection by plant and animal breeders of his day and what he termed “natural selection,” or more generally “selection.” “Natural selection” or “selection” for Darwin included what biologists came to see as being composed of (1) phenotypic selection of individuals based on phenotypic differences, and, when these are based on heritable genotypic differences, (2) genet...
